Free Annual Credit Report

Did you know that you're entitled to a free annual credit report with each of the three national consumer reporting companies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion)? Check your credit regularly to help ensure that no loans, credit cards, or other financial obligations have been fraudulently initiated in your name.

You can find out more here … http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/menus/consumer/credit/rights.shtm

editors note: I just started requesting these myself. After some consideration, to get the most out of it, I decided to mark my calendar to request from one agency every 4 months. That meets the “once per agency per 12 months” criteria, but allows me to check 3 times a year!

Night Watch Service

clip_image001

Many of you who live or grew up in Black communities in the United States have probably heard of "Watch Night Services," the gathering of the faithful in church on New Year's Eve.

The service usually begins anywhere from 7 p.m. To 10 p.m. And ends at midnight with the entrance of the New Year.
Some folks come to church first, before going out to celebrate.
For others, church is the only New Year's Eve event.
Like many others, I always assumed that Watch Night was a fairly standard Christian religious service -- made a bit more Afro centric because that's what happens when elements of Christianity become linked with the Black Church.
Still, it seemed that predominately White Christian churches did not include Watch Night services on their calendars, but focused instead on Christmas Eve programs.
In fact, there were instances where clergy in mainline denominations wondered aloud about the propriety of linking religious services with a secular holiday like New Year's Eve.
However, there is a reason for the importance of New Year's Eve services in African American congregations.
The Watch Night Services in Black communities that we celebrate today can be traced back to gatherings on December 31, 1862, also known as "Freedom's Eve."
On that night, Blacks came together in churches and private homes all across the nation, anxiously awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation actually had become law.
Then, at the stroke of midnight, it was January 1, 1863, and all slaves in the Confederate States were declared legally free .
When  the news was received, there were prayers, shouts and songs of joy as people fell to their knees and thanked God.
Black folks have gathered in churches annually on New Year's Eve ever since, praising God for bringing us safely through another year.
It's been 148 years since that first Freedom's Eve and many of us were never taught the African American history of Watch Night, but tradition still brings us together at this time every year to celebrate
"how we got over."
PS- Pass this information on so we can educate more of our Family and Friends about our History!

MLK Day of Service
Monday, January 18, 2010
9:00am-3:00pm

Inspired by the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., LIVE THE DREAM - LIVE UNITED is an intergenerational, interfaith, multicultural initiative that will engage volunteers in service projects and civic dialogue throughout the greater St. Louis region. The projects aim to restore the physical and socio-economic fabric of our community while the dialogue aims to foster relationships among residents and help them come to understand the root causes and potential solutions for some of our region’s most pressing social issues.
Projects
The scope of LIVE THE DREAM - LIVE UNITED revolves around three areas of Restoration:
Physical Restoration – Volunteers will work in groups to beautify streets and alleyways, as well as provide minor repair and/or modest weatherization in homes, places of worship, schools and other facilities in low-income neighborhoods
Socio-Economic Restoration – Skilled volunteers will facilitate financial stability and technology workshops to help bridge both the economic and technological divide
Relationship Restoration – Trained facilitators will lead volunteer teams in dialogue following the projects about social justice and continuing the work of Dr. King
Beyond MLK Day
In partnership with a strong collaboration of community-based, faith-based, and diversity-focused organizations, as well as neighborhood schools, national volunteer corps, governmental agencies, financial institutions, and for-profit companies, the United Way Volunteer Center will organize two additional project days each year.

Rev. Dr. Harold J. Butler, Senior Pastor

November 13, 2009

Greetings Pastors, Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

We the Northern Missionary Baptist Church Family request the power of your prayer in a Nation Wide Prayer Day. On Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 12 Noon or before you dismiss morning worship. We are asking each congregation gathered to offer a prayer to God that God will heal our city, state and nation from Cancer, Diabetes and all Manner of Diseases, Crime and Murder amongst his people and for Spiritual Guidance for our youth. God says, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (Second Chronicles 7:14)

So we are asking that all churches assembled come together with us in asking God’s blessings and healing upon His people. It is recorded in Philippians 4:6, “Be careful for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your request be made known unto God.”

Please stand in agreement with us on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 12 Noon or before you dismiss morning worship and let us pray for the healing of our city, state and nation.

Prayerfully submitted,
Pastor Harold J. Butler and Northern Missionary Baptist Church Family
Deacon Jerry Watson

Tips on Staying Safe during the Holiday Shopping Season

Tips on Staying Safe during the Holiday Shopping Season

The holiday shopping season is here and millions of people will be heading to the nation's shopping malls focused on finding the perfect gifts, but crime isn't taking a holiday.  Police departments across the country report increased calls during the holiday season when shoppers tend to think less about holiday shopping mall safety and more about buying presents.

Shopping mall safety is especially important this holiday season when malls are more vulnerable to crime.  Please remember, it's never possible to completely eliminate the risk of crime, but being aware of your surroundings and choosing to shop at malls that take security seriously are two important things you can do to help protect yourself and your family against crime while shopping this season.

Follow these tips to help make holiday shopping safer for you and your family:

  • Park in a well-lit area as close to your destination as possible. Parking lots and structures are typically the most dangerous places at the mall. If you are shopping alone and feel uncomfortable walking to your car at night, ask mall security officers for an escort. Consider valet parking during the holiday season when many malls offer free or reduced price valet parking. Look for security cameras and try to park near them. Also, opt for walkways leading to malls and parking lots that have security cameras installed.
  • Choose to do your holiday shopping at malls that take security seriously. Shopping destinations with regular mall security patrols and visible surveillance cameras provide an added layer of security and a deterrent to criminals.
  • Avoid using restrooms that are tucked away in a back area of a mall or store department. If you can, find a restroom near the mall's food court or other well-trafficked area and always accompany your child.
  • Don't overload yourself with packages. Thieves are always on the lookout for people who might be distracted.  Keep track of your packages and try to stay off your cell phone. Hold your purse close to your body or use a front pocket if carrying a wallet.
  • Always know where the closest exits are located. In case of a fire or other emergency, make sure you can find the nearest exits and remember to avoid using elevators in an emergency.
  • Take extra care when returning to your car. If you notice anyone suspicious in the parking area you can use your keys as a weapon. If needed, you can also use your car's alarm system by pushing the panic button on your alarm remote control or car horn to draw attention.

Being extra vigilant this holiday season may help keep you from becoming a crime victim.  Always trust your instincts and report any and all suspicious activity to shopping mall security officers or your local police.

Two things have to come together in order for a crime to be committed, desire and opportunity. We know there is always someone out there with the desire, we have to minimize the opportunities.

Power & Light Chief Operating Officer Is Making Sure Your Have the Best Experience

Kevin Battle

Kevin Battle, (left) is the Chief Operating Officer of the new Power & Light Entertainment District in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. The Kansas City Local Entertainment Committee is excited what our guests will experience in the renaissance that has taken place in regards to entertainment and eating establishments.

Below is a commentary by Kevin Battle in the September issue of the UPDATE, a publication of the Kansas City Power & Light District.

Each day I try to walk the entire District - all

nine blocks. Most times I walk the District

more than once. At times I walk alone and

other times with team members. On this

day, I have the opportunity to experience

my walk through the District alone. It's

Friday, as I hastily walk, I stroll past a

diverse continuous stream of fashion,

conversation and most candidly; faces.

I see opalescent faces in honey-suckle,

earth-tones, blanche, caramel, coffee, and

flush scarlet that are glistening from the

heat of the warm sparkling sun.

I slow the pace of my walk to take in

more. To think what used to be blocks

of dilapidated unused parking is now

a major part of the renaissance of

downtown ambience. Under a clear sunset

sky, I have a clean and tranquil view down

the boulevard on Grand. A landscape

filled with delectable, shades of roses,

vincas, spirea, junipers, boxwood and

chrysanthemum seem to overtake the

sidewalks. I watched as patrons enjoyed

aroma filled meals and sunset skies

along the sidewalks or sitting at one of

the District venues while the breezes flow

through open patios, windows and doors.

Gazing down Main Street, there are folks

in business suits, shorts and tees, residents,

tourists and conventioneers dropping in to

see the beautiful store with windows filled

with flowers, cakes and pastries, assorted

libations and balloons just before heading

to the corner spot to have a cup of coffee or

even a relaxing glass of wine.

It all seemed to connect right into the

festive Happy Hour scene in the KC Live!

Block where a spirited "Halfway to PBR"

promotion featured folks of all ages and

families having fun with ropers, live stump

carving and throwing their hats in the ring

for a chance at riding a mechanical bull.

Next, my experience flows into 16 Frames -

a 21st Century rock band that's considered

one of the ten best new bands on television.

Then the flames are fanned hotter with

American Alternative top 40 band - Better

than Ezra. Just across the street in a tree

lined cozy area surrounded in an ambience

of a multicolored clock tower are unique

inviting brick pavers, accompanied with an

open bar and sexy Salsa music swirling in

the warm night air while dancers move their

bodies briskly to the beat. Just shortly later

and certainly not least, one of Hip-Hop's

founding fathers and greatest innovators

who transcend all genres' party music

origins takes the Live! Stage and the crowd

by storm. Around midnight we have the

forever young Grandmaster Flash "spinning

the real wax on the 1s and 2s"!

Still riding high from it all, I near the close.

In route, my attention is captivated by the

timeless and eccentric architectural forms

of the majestic and historic theater. Only

is my attention pulled away by the bright,

massive marquee that glows as a beacon

into the night. What a fun-filled wonderful,

beautiful day into the evening for all - guests,

family and friends - to enjoy the spectacles,

offerings, talent and awestruck ambience of

the District.

I'd like to invite you to join me in the District

for a surprisingly abundant experience and

fun-filled wonderful, beautiful day into the

evening real soon!

Sincerely

Kevin Battle
