Inspired by the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., LIVE THE DREAM - LIVE UNITED is an intergenerational, interfaith, multicultural initiative that will engage volunteers in service projects and civic dialogue throughout the greater St. Louis region. The projects aim to restore the physical and socio-economic fabric of our community while the dialogue aims to foster relationships among residents and help them come to understand the root causes and potential solutions for some of our region’s most pressing social issues.
Projects
The scope of LIVE THE DREAM - LIVE UNITED revolves around three areas of Restoration:
Physical Restoration – Volunteers will work in groups to beautify streets and alleyways, as well as provide minor repair and/or modest weatherization in homes, places of worship, schools and other facilities in low-income neighborhoods
Socio-Economic Restoration – Skilled volunteers will facilitate financial stability and technology workshops to help bridge both the economic and technological divide
Relationship Restoration – Trained facilitators will lead volunteer teams in dialogue following the projects about social justice and continuing the work of Dr. King
Beyond MLK Day
In partnership with a strong collaboration of community-based, faith-based, and diversity-focused organizations, as well as neighborhood schools, national volunteer corps, governmental agencies, financial institutions, and for-profit companies, the United Way Volunteer Center will organize two additional project days each year.
§ The second project day will be in May with a focus on summer volunteerism
§ The third project day will be in September to commemorate 9/11
