The Wellness Community of Greater St. Louis is part of a national non-profit organization dedicated to helping people affected by cancer enhance health and well being through participation in a professional program of emotional support, education and hope. TWC offers FREE, professionally facilitated support groups, educational programs, stress management classes/groups, gentle movement and exercise classes, and social offerings for people affected by cancer of any diagnosis at any stage of the disease. Bear Essentials is a support group for children, ages 4 to 12, of cancer patients. It focuses on the basic necessities of children when a parent has cancer: information, emotional support, opportunity for expression and hope. Parents meet at the same time to discuss issues related to strengthening families. Learning packets are also available for families to use at home. Group discussions are led by a team of professionals who are experienced in working with cancer patients and their families.

A support program for children ages 4 to 12 whose mother or grandmother has breast cancer. Priority will be given to City of St. Louis residents. Meets 1st and 3rd Wednesday every month. Facilitated by Siteman Cancer Center professionals. H.U.G.S. kids may talk about: What is cancer, How to express feelings, Ways to be supportive and helpful to mom or grandma. This group will be offered to children who are currently in grades 2-6, and who have parents that are separated, divorcing or already divorced. This group will discuss topics such as: why parents marry and divorce, children’s perception of household changes, custody and visitation, simple legal terms, step-parents, and understanding happy marriages. The group runs for 10 consecutive weeks. Group size is limited.

The S.A.F.E. Clinic provides outpatient services to individuals who self-injure and want to stop. S.A.F.E. Choice™: A group psychotherapy program that is offered in six-week sessions, with group meetings one time per week, for 1.5 hours.

Appropriate candidates are adolescents and adults who self-injure and want to change the behavior. Participants may have attended one of the S.A.F.E. ALTERNATIVES Programs; however it is not a requirement. Group size is limited. A licensed clinical therapist with an expertise in self injury facilitates the group.

Assessment costs are typically $125. Groups last for six sessions. Each group session is held for 90 minutes, and costs $65 per session.

Participant Responsibilities:

All participants are encouraged to be in outpatient individual and/or family therapy. All participants will sign a S.A.F.E. Choice Promise and a group contract. Payment is expected at the time of service; receipts may be submitted to insurance for reimbursement.

RAVEN offers a number of programs that focus on domestic violence. Community education programs provides workshops and trainings on domestic and dating violence to professionals, community members and students at local organizations, places of worship, high schools and universities. 

RAVEN’s batterers intervention program works with men who have been abusive and/or violent in their intimate relationships for a minimum of 48 weeks.  In this program, men are educated about the ramifications of their abusive behaviors and are taught non-violent alternatives.

RAVEN’s youth violence prevention program works with at-risk youth to teach them the knowledge, skills and tools necessary to prevent perpetration and/or victimization of violence.

Safe Connections offers a variety of groups, classes and workshops free of charge. These can complement individual counseling or be used as a stand-alone service. These services help women gain social support and connect with others in a healing environment.

Support groups and classes include: Steps to Healing in Relationships; Building Healthy Relationships; Healing Through Art; The Mother Within; Body Image; Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse; Building Effective Communication Skills; Work Readiness.

The program provides individuals with meal support and intensive group and individual therapy. Each individual is seen weekly by a primary therapist and bi-weekly by the dietician and a life coach. The Institute offers weekly therapy groups. On Tuesdays from 5-6 pm, there is a group for anorexia and bulimia therapeutic recovery for ages 14 and up. On Wednesdays from 6-7 pm, they offer a compulsive eating and binge eating disorder therapeutic group for those age 17 and older. The Institute also offers individual nutritional counseling.

This group is open to children in grades K-6, meeting for six weeks. Many studies have shown that social skills can and should be taught to those children who are struggling. Children who are shy can become more outgoing, aggressive children can learn self-control and compromise, while those who tend to be social isolates can be taught how to make friends. The group will provide not only the opportunity for additional learning experiences, but also a chance for children to belong, express themselves and benefit from the support of group members.

  1. Thanks for providing this list of resources. I just have one correction: You list Crider Center for Mental Health as a resource for schools in a crisis situation. Please note that the organization is called Crider Health Center, and that they provide preventive behavioral health services, integrated health care services, case management, and crisis intervention. The phone number to call for assistance is 636-332-6000. The website is www.cridercenter.org. They serve St. Charles County, Warren County, Lincoln County and Franklin County.
