We look forward to your coming with great expectation. It is our pleasure and joy to have you back in our city once again. Dr. Julius Scruggs Signs First Convention Center Contract as NBCUSA, Inc. President Dr. Julius R. Scruggs, the newly elected president of the National Baptist Convention U.S.A., Inc. was in Kansas City, Missouri  October 18 - 20, 2009 to view the convention facilities and make the final commitment for the 2010 annual session. Accompanying Dr. Scruggs were Administrative Assistant Dr. Robert Scott Jones and Housing Director Marsha Dupont. The 2010 convention will be in Kansas City, Missouri September 6 - 20, 2010. The Local Entertainment Committee is comprised of members from churches of the states of Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. After touring the convention facilities and meeting with the local committee, Dr. Scruggs (left) signed his first convention center contract as president for one of the national meetings. Dr. Scruggs and Oscar McGaskey, Jr. share a light moment following the signing over the pen Dr. Scruggs used to sign the contract.     Local Committee Hosts Dr. Scruggs and National Site Team The Kansas City Local Entertainment Committee hosted newly elected president Dr. Julius R. Scruggs for a site visit of Kansas City, Missouri that will host the 2010 National Baptist Convention. Accompanying Dr. Scruggs was Administrative Assistant Dr. Robert Scott Jones and Housing Director Marsha Dupont. The Local Committee hosted a dinner meeting for the site team to give them an update on their preparations for the convention. The dinner meeting was held at the downtown Marriott Hotel. The various committee chairmen gave their report on their preparations and readiness for the convention. The head table at the meeting are standing during the opening song. Brown - Missouri State President     Meet the General Chairman Dr. John Modest Miles Dr. John Modest Miles of Kansas City, Missouri will be serving as the General Chairman of the Kansas City Local Entertainment Committee to host the 2010 National Baptist Convention on the week of September 6 - 10, 2010. His is the pastor of the Morning Star Baptist Church, past Moderator of the New Era District Association for twelve years, past Second Vice President of the Missionary Baptist State Convention of Missouri and Trustee Board member of Arkansas Baptist College, Little Rock, AR and Western Baptist Bible College, Kansas City, MO. Dr. Miles served as General Chairman for both the 1998 and 2003 conventions when Kansas City hosted. He is probably the only person who have hosted three National Baptist Conventions in its history. John Modest Miles was born in Magnolia, Arkansas.  He received his education from the following schools: New Hope High School, Mt. Holly, AR; Los Angeles Trade School, Los Angeles, CA; Highland Park College, Detroit, MI; Philander Smith College, Little Rock, AR; Arkansas Baptist College (B.S. Degree), Little Rock, AR; Quachita Baptist College, M. ED. Degree, Arkadelphia, AR; Central Mississippi College (D.D. Degree), Koscuisko, MS; Midwestern Theological Seminary, Kansas City, MO; and Western Baptist Bible College (Honorary D.D. Degree), Kansas City, MO. John Modest was licensed as a Minister in 1963 at Paradise Baptist Church in Los Angeles, CA at the age of 18.  He was ordained at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Detroit, MI.  He was the pastor of True Faith Baptist Church, Detroit MI for 4 years; Liberty Hill Baptist Church and Mount Sinai Baptist Church - both in Little Rock, AR for 16 years.  He is currently serving as pastor of Morning Star Baptist Church, Kansas City, MO where he has been serving since April 5, 1987. He was also a teacher in the Little Rock Public School system, and an instructor at Arkansas Baptist College.  He served as the Moderator of the New Era District Association, Kansa City, MO which includes 43 local churches for 12 years.  He is a long time friend of President Bill Clinton. He is married to Jeanette Richard Miles and they have three children:  Gerald, Janet and Derrick (Renee).  He is the grandfather of 6 grandchildren.   Accomplishments §   Purchased and demolished 28 houses and commercial buildings §         Remodeled Morning Star sanctuary twice §         Speaker at the Inaugural of Governor Bill Clinton - 1979 §         Served on a Special Committee sent to Africa to meet with President Nelson Mandela in 1994 §         Organized and hosted a Task Force of government agencies from the Clinton administration to present programs and strategies to clergy of Kansas and Missouri - 1994 §         Honored in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 & 1998 as "One Hundred Most Influential African-Americans in Kansas City §         General Chairman of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. held in Kansas City, MO in 1998 and 2003 §         Past Member of the Board of Directors for Health Midwest Partners for Change §         Presented the Home Town Hero Award by the Convention & Visitors Bureau of Greater Kansas City - May 2001 §         Appointed as Chaplain of the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department - 2003 until now §         Past Vice President-At-Large of the Missouri Missionary Baptist State Convention §         Member of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. The Kansas City Local Entertainment Committee is excited what our guests will experience in the renaissance that has taken place in regards to entertainment and eating establishments. Below is a commentary by Kevin Battle in the September issue of the UPDATE, a publication of the Kansas City Power & Light District.   Each day I try to walk the entire District - all nine blocks. Most times I walk the District more than once. At times I walk alone and other times with team members. On this day, I have the opportunity to experience my walk through the District alone. It's Friday, as I hastily walk, I stroll past a diverse continuous stream of fashion, conversation and most candidly; faces. I see opalescent faces in honey-suckle, earth-tones, blanche, caramel, coffee, and flush scarlet that are glistening from the heat of the warm sparkling sun. I slow the pace of my walk to take in more. To think what used to be blocks of dilapidated unused parking is now a major part of the renaissance of downtown ambience. Under a clear sunset sky, I have a clean and tranquil view down the boulevard on Grand. A landscape filled with delectable, shades of roses, vincas, spirea, junipers, boxwood and chrysanthemum seem to overtake the sidewalks. I watched as patrons enjoyed aroma filled meals and sunset skies along the sidewalks or sitting at one of the District venues while the breezes flow through open patios, windows and doors. Gazing down Main Street, there are folks in business suits, shorts and tees, residents, tourists and conventioneers dropping in to see the beautiful store with windows filled with flowers, cakes and pastries, assorted libations and balloons just before heading to the corner spot to have a cup of coffee or even a relaxing glass of wine.   It all seemed to connect right into the festive Happy Hour scene in the KC Live! Block where a spirited "Halfway to PBR" promotion featured folks of all ages and families having fun with ropers, live stump carving and throwing their hats in the ring for a chance at riding a mechanical bull. Next, my experience flows into 16 Frames - a 21st Century rock band that's considered one of the ten best new bands on television. Then the flames are fanned hotter with American Alternative top 40 band - Better than Ezra. Just across the street in a tree lined cozy area surrounded in an ambience of a multicolored clock tower are unique inviting brick pavers, accompanied with an open bar and sexy Salsa music swirling in the warm night air while dancers move their bodies briskly to the beat. Just shortly later and certainly not least, one of Hip-Hop's founding fathers and greatest innovators who transcend all genres' party music origins takes the Live! Stage and the crowd by storm. Around midnight we have the forever young Grandmaster Flash "spinning the real wax on the 1s and 2s"! Still riding high from it all, I near the close. In route, my attention is captivated by the timeless and eccentric architectural forms of the majestic and historic theater. Only is my attention pulled away by the bright, massive marquee that glows as a beacon into the night. What a fun-filled wonderful, beautiful day into the evening for all - guests, family and friends - to enjoy the spectacles, offerings, talent and awestruck ambience of the District. I'd like to invite you to join me in the District for a surprisingly abundant experience and fun-filled wonderful, beautiful day into the evening real soon! Accelerated Phase 1 School

The Philadelphia District is having an Accelerated Phase 1 School in order to assist in getting Certified Teachers to teach the Certified Courses offered through the Sunday School Publishing Board. It would also be great if the Teachers in our Sunday Schools who do not want to teach in the Congresses or other certified schools were themselves certified in order to increase their Biblical knowledge and show the Church that our teachers are Saved and taught, that they may teach others the truth of this great gospel. Not only does He live, He still saves!!!!!  There is somebody waiting on the other side of your obedience!!!! Great service require great sacrifice........
