American Red Cross Offers Winter Storm Safety Tips
What to Do before and during a Winter Storm

ST. LOUIS, DECEMBER 5, 2013— As the first dose of winter weather falls in St. Louis and the surrounding areas in Missouri and Illinois, the American Red Cross Greater St. Louis Region wants to remind the community how to stay safe.

"Winter storms can bring a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. It's important to be prepared ahead of the storm – and know what to do during it as well," said Cindy Erickson, Regional CEO of the Red Cross. "It's always a good idea to have emergency supplies for your entire household at home and in your car, because you never know what may happen."

Pay Attention to Weather Forecasts
People should know the difference between a winter storm watch and a warning. A watch is issued when winter storm conditions are possible within the next 36 to 48 hours. During a warning, severe weather conditions have already begun or will begin within 24 hours and people should take precautions immediately. Stay tuned to weather reports for the latest predictions and occurrences.

Before and During the Storm
The Red Cross recommends having the following items on hand in a convenient spot:
  • At least a 3-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day) and non-perishable food;
  • A flashlight, battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio and extra batteries;
  • A well-stocked first aid kit;
  • A 7-day supply of medications and medical items; and
  • Supplies for babies and pets.

Also, prepare your home and animals:
  • Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out.
  • Bring pets inside. Move other animals and livestock to sheltered areas.

Other tips to keep in mind:
  • Stay inside. If people must go out, wear warm, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in layers.
  • Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, allow plenty of time to get to your destination and keep emergency supplies in the vehicle.
    • Winterize your vehicle and keep the gas tank full. A full tank will keep the fuel line from freezing.
    • Have an emergency kit in your car, including a blanket, food, water, winter coat and accessories, flashlight, first aid kit and vehicle powered phone charger.
·       Go to a designated public shelter if your home loses power or heat during
periods of extreme cold. Locally people can call 211 to get locations.
·       Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.
·       Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space or any partially enclosed area. Locate unit away from doors, windows and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors.

Additional Outdoor Safety Information
  • Before you take on any strenuous work in cold temperatures—such as shoveling snow—consider your physical condition, the weather and the nature of the task. Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated while working, and avoid overexertion.
  • Seek medical attention immediately if you have symptoms of hypothermia, including confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and severe shivering. Also seek immediate medical attention if you have symptoms of frostbite: these include numbness; flushed gray, white, blue or yellow skin discoloration; and waxy-feeling skin.

Erickson reminds everyone: "Check in on your neighbors – especially those requiring special assistance and those living alone."

Winter precipitation can cause power outages. It is a good idea to maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected every year. For more information on what to do during a power outage, click here.

People can learn what to do in an emergency in case advanced medical help is delayed by taking a First Aid and CPR/AED course and by downloading the free American Red Cross First Aid App.

Additional information on what supplies to have and what to do before, during and after a winter storm is located at redcross.org/wintersafety. A downloadable winter storm safety checklist can be found here.

The Red Cross is part of the "All Ready" campaign, a unified effort among emergency preparedness experts in the bi-state region that focuses on the importance of individual preparedness. The campaign encourages the three critical steps of preparedness: Make a plan, Get a kit, Be informed.

The American Red Cross Greater St. Louis Region is a proud member agency of the United Way, which makes significant investments every year in Red Cross services.

Thanks,

Yvonne

Response to Sen. Claire McCaskill

Have you done this lately? or at all?

To: Senator Claire McCaskill
Subject: RE: Why is this still legal?

Senator McCaskill,

I have to respectfully disagree on this one. I cannot encourage behavior that is biblically wrong. Tough love dictates that you let people know when they are wrong. The operative word being love, not mania or wild attack.

I believe the Biblically correct position is to love all individuals but discourage behavior that goes against the Bible.

Subject: Why is this still legal?

We need our laws to reflect our values.

Ronald,

No matter where you work in this great country, it is against the law for your employer to fire you or hire someone else because of your gender -- so why is it still legal to fire you because of your partner's gender?

Americans agree that discrimination is wrong, but it still happens in far too many workplaces. There's a loophole in the law right now that allows employers throughout America to discriminate against employees in the LGBT community. That's not what we believe in.

We need our laws to reflect our values.

I'm joining with several of my colleagues to support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and end workplace discrimination based on sexuality -- and there's a crucial vote in the Senate tomorrow!

Help build support to end workplace discrimination based on sexuality. Sign the petition my colleagues and I started now.

If this problem has never affected you, then imagine getting fired because your boss thinks you should date someone else. Or imagine your husband or wife getting fired because their boss thinks they shouldn't see you.

Supporting equality for gay and lesbian couples is simply the right thing to do for our country, a country founded on the principles of liberty and equality.

With the Employment Non-Discrimination Act coming up for an important vote in the Senate tomorrow, my colleagues and I are rushing to build as much support as we can right now for ending this discrimination.

Support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act now, before the vote tomorrow: No one should be fired because of whom they love.

Thank you for your support,

Claire

Subject: Dr. Julius R. Scruggs Invites You to Attend a Webinar on the Health Care Law

A Special Invitation from Dr. Julius R. Scruggs

Join the National Baptist Convention, USA, Incorporated, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Enroll America to learn more about how the nation's health care law, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), can benefit your congregations and the communities you serve.

Dr. Julius Scruggs has scheduled an NBCUSA Affordable Care Act webinar for Monday, November 4, 2013, 8:30 p.m. EST (7:30 p.m. CST). This call is done in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Enroll America. African-Americans are disproportionately more likely to be uninsured, with more than 1 out of every 5 being without health care coverage. The good news is that this fall marks the beginning of an historic opportunity to enroll millions of uninsured Americans into coverage through the new Health Insurance Marketplace made available by the ACA. This webinar with experts from HHS, Enroll America, and the NBCUSA will provide you with the information you need to know about the law and how you can help spread the word to family, friends, and neighbors who need health care coverage. We'll also discuss NBCUSA ACA Enrollment Weekend of Action November 16-17, 2013, including our NBCUSA ACA toolkit.

Please visit https://cc.readytalk.com/cc/s/registrations/new?cid=o99crcclo1ba to register for the webinar and access information will be sent once you register. We encourage you to invite other community partners working on Health Insurance Marketplace outreach to join you for the webinar. For more information, e-mail hope@nationalbaptist.com.

Abstinence Education; Safety, Teen Pregnancy Prevention, Emotional Wellness

Greetings -

I trust that all is well with you.  Effective July 8 through July 31, I wanted to share with you a youth development health and wellness program/ministry for the church that you may be interested entitled "Pause for the Cause."  The curriculum utilized is Choosing the Best - www.choosingthebest.org .  The age ranges are 10-17 or 6th grade through 12th grade.  If you have a group of boys and girls that you would like to complete this 14 hour program, I will have time to train at least one group on a first come, first served basis; maybe two (2) if done at least three (3) times per week.  The age groups are as follows as it relates to training:

6th grade - Choosing the Best Way

7th grade - Choosing the Best Path

8th grade - Choosing the Best Life

9th & 10th grade - Choosing the Best Journey

11th and 12th - Choosing the Best Soul Mate

A mixture of children of all ages -- 12-17, Choosing the Best Life can be utilized

The program focuses on 100% abstinence; teen pregnancy prevention, safety from sexual transmitted diseases, emotional wellness, students and parent communication, and connection skills.  In addition, children will learn how to make good decisions, set goals, identify risks, and make commitments.  The key is abstain from sex until marriage and avoid drugs and alcohol which can lead to all of the above.

This would be a great youth ministry for your church during the Summer and excellent for youth academies and/or evenings.  Saturday are possible if this is the only time available.

I do look forward to working with you or your staff.

Forgot to mention, this is a free grant funded program through Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Missouri; received via Missouri State Department of Health and Senior Services; via U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  I admonish all of my Christian Brothers and Sisters to take advantage of the programs as they are great ministries for the Church--

Yours In Christ

Linda Joyce Mackey
