James Brown Sr. Ave. St. Louis, MO 63108 314-531-3759 Mrs. Carole Brown   Watch Night Service Many of you who live or grew up in Black communities in the United States have probably heard of "Watch Night Services," the gathering of the faithful in church on New Year's Eve. The service usually begins anywhere from 7 p.m. To 10 p.m. And ends at midnight with the entrance of the New Year. Some folks come to church first, before going out to celebrate. For others, church is the only New Year's Eve event. Like many others, I always assumed that Watch Night was a fairly standard Christian religious service -- made a bit more Afro centric because that's what happens when elements of Christianity become linked with the Black Church. Still, it seemed that predominately White Christian churches did not include Watch Night services on their calendars, but focused instead on Christmas Eve programs. In fact, there were instances where clergy in mainline denominations wondered aloud about the propriety of linking religious services with a secular holiday like New Year's Eve. However, there is a reason for the importance of New Year's Eve services in African American congregations. The Watch Night Services in Black communities that we celebrate today can be traced back to gatherings on December 31, 1862, also known as "Freedom's Eve." On that night, Blacks came together in churches and private homes all across the nation, anxiously awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation actually had become law. Then, at the stroke of midnight, it was January 1, 1863, and all slaves in the Confederate States were declared legally free . When  the news was received, there were prayers, shouts and songs of joy as people fell to their knees and thanked God. Black folks have gathered in churches annually on New Year's Eve ever since, praising God for bringing us safely through another year. It's been 145 years since that first Freedom's Eve and many of us were never taught the African American history of Watch Night, but tradition still brings us together at this time every year to celebrate "how we got over." Prayer Requests–Intercessory Prayer

Brethren,  The prayer request area of the State Convention Website is up and fully functional. It will even allow you to “subscribe” to a “Prayer Chain”. What that means is that if you enter your email address, whenever a request is APPROVED, you will get a copy of it.

Might I suggest that we keep each other informed of local members in need of prayer on the site? It might also make sense to either subscribe to the Prayer Chain or check the site just before any district Prayer Meetings and remember those in need of prayer.

I will get an email each time a request is submitted and will approve the requests as soon as possible. Let’s face it, people have always abused stuff and today is no different. There is a language filter but who knows what might slip through without eyes on before posting.

Church went home to be with the Lord this morning.  Today she would have celebrated her birthday.. however God wanted the saints who have been called on before to celebrate with her.   Sis. Webb worked in the Berean District in the WMU, and in the Congress of Christian Education.  She will be missed by her church family and friends.  Please keep Bro. and Sis. As a Minority Council Member of the American Heart/Stroke Association, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Power to End Stroke Luncheon, I would like to invite you to register for the which will be held on Saturday January 15, 2011; space is limited, therefore, you must register immediately.  It will be held at the Sheraton St. Louis City Center Hotel & Suites, 400 S 14th Street, St. Louis, MO 63103.  The Metro Link is directly across from the facility.  Kinks are being worked out at this time concerning a discount or no fee at all on parking.  The Luncheon is free but you cannot get in after 11:30 a.m.  Members had the opportunity to taste the food at our last meeting, it's great!  Regina Belle is the national spokesperson, and will speak and/or sing; possibly both.

I need your support.  As members of this great council, we are encouraged to invite others to attend the health fair and to be screened.  You will have the opportunity to have your blood sugar, pressure, cholesterol, body mass index, and much more screened.  After obtaining at least seven (7) screenings, you will be entered into contest to win a nice, nice prize - surprise. The health fair begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 11:00 a.m., again the Luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m.  No one will be allowed to enter after 12:00 noon, and before 11:30 a.m. for the Luncheon, unless you are being screened (priority).

The American Heart Association is expecting at least 600 people, if you register and cannot attend, please, please, please cancel the reservation.  Thanks for all that you do to help others, our families, children and community.

YPD Northview Village Pilgrimage

The WMU Young People’s Department Annual Pilgrimage to Northview Village is this Saturday, December 4, 2010.  The staff has requested we change our time to 1:00 pm.  We cannot give out blankets, socks, etc during our visit.  It will be given to the staff and they will pass them out to the residents on Monday.

We will still be giving out apples and oranges and our young folks will be able to present their songs, poems, skits that they have prepared.

Please bring your youth out and bring a love offering to help with the cost of the fruit.
